THE TECHNIQUE

How a lithograph is made

A lithograph is drawn or painted directly onto the stone, guaranteeing a 100% authentic transfer of the artist's hand into print. From the stone it is transferred to paper with a roller — and every colour has to be drawn onto the stone again.

It is a demanding process, both in time and in technique. Mistakes are rarely forgiven — on the artist's side or the printer's.

The key difference from other techniques: after printing, the stone is ground down completely, destroying the printing matrix. The motif can never be printed again.

That is what makes lithographs — unlike ordinary prints or screen prints — true collector's pieces. Printed at the Říční lithography workshop in Prague.

What is a lithograph

Printing from stone — a two-hundred-year-old technique where every sheet is pulled by hand. Not a reproduction: a lithograph is made as a work of its own, which is why it counts as original printmaking.

Editions and numbering

Each sheet carries a hand signature and edition number (e.g. 12/30). Once printed, the stone is ground down — the count never grows.

Shipping and certificate
